Tyrone Spong Returns to Light Heavyweight for the GLORY 9 Tournament in New York

Fresh off his TKO win over Remy Bonjasky in London, Tyrone “King of the Ring” Spong will be making his return to kickboxing at GLORY 9 New York to take part of GLORY’s first ever light heavyweight tournament.

Hands down, Spong will be the favorite to win. After making a career beating, or at least going toe-to-toe, with some of the best heavyweight fighters in the game, Spong is finally settling into his natural weight at 95 kilograms.

Already in the tournament, Spong’s biggest threats are Australia Steve McKinnon, Holland’s Michael Duut, former It’s Showtime world champion Danyo Ilunga, and the always dangerous Filip Verlinden. However, despite the talented competition in New York, it is, for all intents and purposes, Spong’s tournament to lose.

It will be interesting to see how “The King of the Ring” looks at his natural, which he hasn’t fought at for quite some time. With GLORY’s push to acquire and breed new talent in the 95 kg division (Including American stars Brian “The Lion” Collette and  former MMA fighter Dustin Jacoby, both of which are also competing in New York) Spong may very well become an official mainstay of the light heavyweight division.

In my opinion, there are very light heavyweights in the game right now capable of exchanging with Spong. While it’s always a pleasure to watch him compete, I can’t imagine the young and unrefined 95 kilo fighters will give him much trouble for some time to come. Regardless, he is another big name added to the New York event, and stars in the states is what GLORY desperately needs to be successful.

GLORY 9 will be happening on June 22 in New York, so stay with FSA for all your updates and breaking kickboxing news.
