Buakaw’s Fight Against Quentin Chong Might Be His Strangest Yet

Every time I see Buakaw perform, I think to myself- “There’s no way his next appearance could be more insane than the last one.” And yet somehow, despite the odds, I am almost always proven wrong.

Yesterday in Koh Samui, the high prince of Muay Thai faced off against South Africa’s Quentin Chong in a battle that no one quite understood the significance of. Well, battle is maybe an overstatement. The match was, as predicted, an exhibition that came at the tail end of a four man tournament.

What we expected was Buakaw’s typical, long winded wai kru, maybe some dancing, maybe some unnecessary padwork, probably Buakaw getting upset and knocking Chong out because he was being upstaged in the acting department. You know, normal things.

What we actually got was on the far side of strange.

Quentin Chong is not a traditional Thai boxer. Apparently, he is a master of kung fu, and entered the ring against Buakaw wearing mma gloves and pants while and performing strange matrix style maneuvers. Quentin spent the “fight” throwing less than dexterous kicks at Buakaw , as Buakaw tried his best not to actually kill Chong with his fake punches.

The end of the bout saw both men’s hands raised, and the muay thai community, yet again, wondered why it continued to care about these fights.

While Buakaw does what he must to remain relevant and earn money, it would seem more feasible to simply fight low level foreigners in Thai Fight, that way he could at least be a part of actual matches again and possibly make amends for his earlier transgressions against the organization. It might be too premature to say, but in my opinion I sincerely doubt we’ll see Buakaw headline any more MAX Muay Thai shows. It will be a long climb back up the mountain if he wants to re-earn the international community’s dwindling support.

Chong is a fake….why couldn’t he market himself as a x2 World Muaythai Champ for the fight? To save embarrassment in Thailand…to the locals, he spins he’s yarn..WMC…a little school in Khoi Samuai which Chong intially trained at for 2 weeks and came back to SA to start training Muay Thai. He the fights fighters from the WMC School…when ever he goes over and builds this up as a substantial career record. Who sanctioned these 17 or something pro fights, where are the records, where did they take place…i can’t find them. In Thailand, kids as young as 16 have 300 bouts behind them before they even get a break. Chong always goes to Khoi Samuai to arrange he’s fights, not Bangkok, or Pattaya, or North towards Chiang Mai. He promotes he’s affiliation to a school called WMC which has created its own confederation. All Muay Thail Sports is endorsed by Royal Decree in Thailand. He keeps on promoting himself as exclusive. What a let down, that in he’s final exhibition, which is exactly what it is…EGO and all, that he brought Kung Fu into disrepute, having not displayed an iota of self respect, discipline or awareness. Its all about he’s little Hollywood repertoire, cheesy nick, tats and hair piece. The Emperor’s love for new yarn is indeed apparent. People who blindly support Chong, while disregarding he’s inconsistencies and hypocrasies in what he apparently stands for, are of the same ilk who blindly support their own political party, making up excuses for any apparent shortcomings instead realising that they are all just pawns in the hype marketed to an egotiscal audience.

O yes, what Muay Thai forms do they actually teach at Dragon Power? No forms? Just drill work? In that case, i think i’d get a better workout from Billy Blanks and he’s Tae Bo series from the comfort of my home and still reason without Hero Worshipping……just my 2 cents.

Chong’s record does not make any sense. He is more of a fake than anything else. he is not a world class fighter.

    • May 29, 2013 at 9:19 am #

That is such a ridiculous comment, how can you become a 2x World Muyat Thai Champion and be fake. He has trained so many top class South African fighters. Get your facts straight before you make such a blatantly stupid comment.

Geeeez “Chris” so much hatred coming from you… maybe you should have fought Buakaw!! I mean, you have an answer for everyones “own opinion” maybe u’d have an even better answer for Buakaws kicks. You dont think Chong was a good fighter, fair enough, u dont like him as a person, ur choice. But how/why do u call him a fake? He trained me for 1 and I got 4titles including 1international belt and I now fight in Thailand. Fighting my way into Lumpinee.
Anyways Chris, I dont believe he cud habe beaten Buakaw that man is a top class warrior. and Quentin is in his 40’s. I think its great that he stepped into the ring and had the SA flag waved.
Ps: 3 fighters from Quentins gym will be competing in EFC soon.

    May 30, 2013 at 7:02 am #

Quentin started Kung Fu at a very young age and his teacher was from a good lineage (traced back to IP man) back in 1993 he started teaching students kung fu in turn some of his students are now teachers.
The late 90’s he explored Muaythai when it was still unknown to most in South Africa in 2002 he successfully got his 2nd title. He has trained some top class SA Muaythai fighters but unfortunately the way the system works its hard for any South African Sportsperson to get out internationally unless mainstream sport. He was invited by Randy Couture to train him and other UFC fighters. This is proven with letters of thanks from them.
Quentin Chong was offered the fight opportunity against Buakaw (who seems to be in contract dispute with mauythai fights) with only short time to prepare and fly over. Being in his 40’s he didn’t back down and took it, even though his spent most of his last 10 years training fighters and not professional fighting.

These are facts, everything else is assumptions. So Chris, Martin, Jon…. Do something with your life with facts not hearsay.

Fact is, what is kung fu? Now he’s a Kung Fu “MASTER”. Self proclaimed or not? he did wing chun years ago but he’s not a martial artists, its not in he’s form. Northern Style Wushu? I’ll have you know he’s not the most proefficient either, even the school where he did he’s training dont take him seriously. Samuel Kwok? I’d like to see him proudly endorse this display to any of he’s followers. Randy Couture, got conned by a glorified personal instructor who has studied but not practiced in a proefficient manner. He even stylised himself after Bruce Lee, giving he’s brother and himself nicks from the Dragon Tiger form and associating himself with the dragon. This dude wasn’t even born in the year of the Dragon. Cape Town is like the California of Africa, where all the hippies think they in Hollywood, as long as they have the right image. Did you see the expression on he’s face when he forcefully tried to exhibit he’s chi kung skills, ARROGANT (looked a bit worse for wear as well, but thats another story) and he bled!!! To conclude, this guy personally told me Kung Fu is sht compared to Muay Thai and he doesn’t take on any students with previous kung fu training. Him and he’s brother are also permenantly aggressive, getting into fights and thinking they shift ice cream on the night scene. Many an occasion, you’d see him and he’s bevy of female students/admirers/groupies getting out of their mind on the nightclub scene. MAD is also just a cover. Wish SARS would start investigating this windbag

A 2 time world champion in 17 fights, not in any other contact sport in the world, never mind Muay Thai. love him or hate him, that stat is impossible, Jarred, you’re there, you’re trying, how difficult is it ?

p.s. The EFC will sign anyone, there is no minimum experience requirement. You come with a rep or a good amateur performance and you’re in.

Bought those belts?! How ignorant are you really? So you’re saying you have no faith in the sport?

Chong has earned those titles like any man before and after him!

    Show some respect!

If you don’t like him then fine, but you guys are being real trolls! This is exactly the kind of attitudes we don’t need in this sport.

Id gladly step into the ring with any of you to remind you what a wonderful sport this is.

Quentin Chong trained my husband, while my husband was working as a doorman various people would come up to him claiming that each one of Quentin Chong’s fights, the Thai fighter was paid a substancial sum of money to lose the fight in a convincing manner. The amounts the Thai was paid just changed every time. It is common knowledge in SA that his titles were paid for in money. one cannot dispute that he is a business genius and has done very well in promoting himself in whatever way possible. He needs to prove himself in K1 as a legitimate fighter as Buakaw and John Wayne Parr has done.

I trained with Quinton chong for 5 years and he has done more for the sport of Muay Thai in this country than anyone else. For those of you with negative comments – shut your mouths as you don’t know what you talking about. You are simply jelous that it is not you at the forefront of the sport.

      June 4, 2013 at 6:57 am #

So tell me, what form was that, that he executed before the fight, not a Wai Kru was it now Martin? Which one has he taught you and which one has he revealed? Maybe it was “Dragon Tiger” but then again, I didn’t see Tiger in the Vid, just the claws. Neither did i see Samual Kwok Wing Chin..hands by the side…kicks above waist hight…head not centred, with body, loads of imbalance from years of sloppy supposed Muay Thai drill work…those punchs from the side of the body..i’m sorry, thats not Wing Chun. Is that what you learnt as Muay Thai perhaps? Quentin is big with all the yuppy kids from Camps Bay, Sea Point, City Bowl, he used to mark down other fighters who clearly won he’s fighters for not respecting the Wai Kru….then wtf did he do in this fight? He acted all Oriently ignorant to the Thai custome, instead promoting he’s psuedo skills by taking it out on a chop stick…what a chop!

    • Bill
      June 4, 2013 at 10:04 am #

u my boy, were conned for 5 years with Dragon Power always being in control of all scoring and marking down competitive fighters for BS like Wai Kru dancing before the fight, even though the Dragon Power fighter got the shift kicked outer him/her from some upstart school in the Western Cape. They controlled everything. I’ve seen Camps Bay girls win stupid bouts where they clearly been thrown around by girls from impoverished backgrounds, who have clearly had a tougher life and are not self consciences in the ring as to what their attire is or what friggin fancy hairstyle they’ making a statement for at the fight. on the cape flats…for the poor kids..its some exposure fighting against “Dragon Power” fighters…and Quentin giving back to the communinity but its all a con…cause no matter how hard they train…its Quentins fighters who ultimately win…the token mix and social elite of Cape Town…but for himself, its ruthless marketing and the false sense of confidence he gives he’s very amatuer fighters with this titles that he clearly has influence in terms of the outcomes…its a show people…he should hold the WME title, World Muay Thai Entertainment belt. and all those Dragon Power idiots who mimic their “MASTER”, with their meditation beads around their necks in the Nightclubs….you are walking pricks…just highlighted more than others. Everyone knows where you train from the evidence above, who’s skill set you relying on…dont take my word on it…look around. The best teacher is never the one with the biggest Ego..else you just a pawn in their agenda sheeple.

After the shamelss marketing of he’s gear and specials, cause he’s clearly at he’s end or losing students, all you see is him marketing and promoting gear and class before and after hes’ fight. Not even the slightest bit of honesty and refute the draw…if he has watched this fight and with hindsight, he still feels justified in the outcome, then Sheeple, trying to hightlight he’s ignorance would be like farting against Thunder…yours included.

Chong trained Randy Couture and Ruan Potts, UFC and EFC’s biggest names respectively.. Give credit where it is due!

    • QA
      October 21, 2013 at 6:28 am #

Both were accomplished after the fact. Randy came into Quentin by chance taken in by proxie over the hype he’s wife swallowed by Cape Towns self appointed Muay Thai movement. Ruaan saw through the bs, hence Chong no longer has that to he’s credit. In fact, Ruaan is doing just fine without him. Here’s the million dollar question, if Chongs been dissing kung fu since he’s transition to muay thai, why as a former WMC champ, does he tout himself as akung fu exponent in the home off Muay Thai when entering the ring. Why are any of hes students to scared to even question him… and where is the proof, records of the 19 pro fights? (All 19 of them! )
