MIMMA Final Results: Ariel Sexton Smashes Peter Davis in Hometown Upset

Today in Malaysia, MIMMA played host to the conclusion of their amateur mixed martial arts tournament- a long awaited and stringently marketed production that saw some of Malaysia’s best up and comers get their time in the spotlight. The card also drew significant attention for the headline attraction, which featured Malaysian model, actor, and MMA sensation, Peter Davis, taking on BJJ black-belt Ariel “Tarzan” Sexton.

In the main event of the night, Ariel “Tarzan” Sexton- the pride of Costa Rica- pulled off the upset of his career by completely dismantling Peter Davis in the opening round before a crowd of silent fans. Early in the first the fight hit the ground and “Tarzan” immediately moved into a dominate position. The jiu-jitsu wizard opted-out of looking for a submission however, and decided instead to rain punches and elbows down onto Peter’s head. When it seemed as though Malaysia’s golden boy was unable to defend himself, the ref stepped in and the fight was called to a halt.

Prior to this match-up, Peter Davis was being talked about as a possible challenger to ONE FC lightweight champion Shinya Aoki. Obviously his name will fall out of title contention for a while, but perhaps that’s not such a bad thing. One of the best ways to permanently damage a career is to build a fighter up to quickly and convince the audience he is much better than his skill would seem to indicate. This loss will give a dose of realism to both Davis and his ravenous fan-base. Hopefully it will make him a better fighter.

Also on the card, Edward Kelly (brother of Erick) punished The Lanna Warrior, Tanaphong Khunhankaew over three rounds to earn a unanimous decision, while Saiful ‘The Vampire’ Merican defeated Aditya Deshpande on all the judges score-cards.
