Video: Dong Hyun Kim’s vicious KO of Erick Silva

In the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 29 last night, South Korean MMA prodigy Dong Hyun Kim (18-2-1, 1 NC) stunned the Brazilian crowd with a brutal knockout victory over Erick Silva (15-4, 1 NC).

The bout took place in Barueri, Brazil with Kim clearly fighting in hostile territory. But the turn of events proved that the 31-year-old was not intimidated heading into the bout.

“I know Erick has a lot of good strikes, but I believe it was very good luck to have won in the second round like that,” Kim said via translator, at the post-fight press conference.

“Erick Silva was very strong. He started very aggressive, and it was a war. I needed to fight against him, or I was going to lose. So I was trying to make Erick lose his strength. But I think it (the knockout) was luck.”

Kim walks away with his hands raised, upsetting the odds against Silva who may have looked the favorite on paper.

Luck or not, Kim took home an extra $50,000 as part of the UFC’s traditional “Knockout of the Night” bonus.

The South Korean, a member of Busan’s Team M.A.D., was relentless early in round one, where he looked to get his clinch game going along with a takedown. Silva managed to evade the pressure, however, and instead scored with some knees in the clinch. “Stun Gun”managed to end the first round in top position, much to the chagrin of the home crowd.

The second round, meanwhile, saw back-and-forth action from both fighters. After moving forward whilst landing with strikes and knees, Silva delivered a shot that was slipped well by Kim, who countered with a huge left that mercilessly sent his opponent crashing down onto the canvas.
