GLORY 12 results: Upsets galore as Giorgio Petrosyan falls short to tourney winner Andy Ristie

It was a Cinderella story for one Andy Ristie, as he lived the dream of many opportunists by garnering the GLORY Lightweight tournament title and a $150,000 cheque.

GLORY 12: New York took place at the theater at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening, showcasing thirteen stellar bouts on a fight card that aired live on SPIKE TV.

Prior to the start of the event, Ristie, 31, was seen by many as one of the best kickboxers in the globe without a championship belt strapped around his waist. The finals of the tourney was expected to field fighters Giorgio Petrosyan and Robin Van Roosmalen; combatants with no love lost between them given their intense rivalry in the past. Ristie, however, had other ideas.

Ristie stunned the masses when he executed a flurry of punches in the final stanza that sent maestro Petrosyan crashing to the canvas. If that wasn’t enough, Ristie took it one step further in the finals, scoring a spectacular TKO victory over Van Roosmalen. With two fights and two knockouts on one night, the victory parade was on for Ristie who impressed everybody in attendance.

He’s been a serious force to be reckoned with for many years, having notched the 2009 and 2010 K-1 MAX Grand Prix tournament titles among many other accolades in his career thus far. He was seen as a clear-cut favorite by many to emerge as the victor in GLORY’s Lightweight tournament. His exit took the social media universe by storm, as fans were left speechless at Ristie’s remarkable feat. The Suriname native handed Petrosyan just his second defeat in over eighty pro kickboxing outings.

In one of the other featured bouts of the evening, another upset occurred. Following Joe Schilling’s victory at GLORY 10’s Middleweight tourney, he was expected to have an easy outing against up-and-comer Wayne Barrett. But Barrett dropped Schilling multiple times in the first and second frames, en route to a deserved Unanimous Decision victory. It was a bout that certainly deserved “Fight of the night” honors.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Ben Edwards and Ky Hollenbeck as well.
