Fight Sport Asia’s 2013 Asian MMA Awards: Best Fighter (Vote NOW)

It was another stellar year for fans, gyms, fighters and promotions alike with multiple Mixed Martial Arts events taking place across Asia in countries like Singapore, India, China, Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia and many others.

So we, at Fight Sport Asia, have decided to bring you our own inaugural installment of the Asian MMA awards!

The catch? The final results will be based on fans’ votes. That’s right ladies and gentlemen – We are going to ask for your opinion on some of the wildest finishes and fights that took place under all Asian MMA promotions’ banners in 2013. And then.. we’re giving YOU the opportunity to vote for the winners.

While MMA accolades in North America will presumably be dominated by a wide range of UFC fighters and personalities, rest assured it’s going to be much different here in the Asian MMA landscape. Or in our Awards pieces, at least.

Fight Sport Asia has looked through numerous videos of fights over the course of the calendar year and we’ve decided on four different categories that you’ll be asked to vote in: Top 10 Finishes of 2013Best Fight of 2013, Best Fighter of 2013 and Best Promotion of 2013.

There’ll be ten options in this category and you vote for the option that you think impressed you the most. Of course, if you think we left something important off our list, post it in the comments section and if deemed worthy, we’ll add your suggestion to the list. Voting ends on the stroke of midnight, January 4th. Results will be posted on January 5th.

With that, let’s get onto our second poll – Best Fighter of 2013

While a myriad of fighters strove to impress the masses in 2013, only a select few shone in their respective promotions.

In no particular order:

***

  • Hyun Gyu Lim (UFC)

The South Korean has gained back-to-back stoppages under the UFC banner this year, not only impressing fans but catching the attention of UFC president Dana White too. Needless to say, the 28-year-old Korean Top Team native is in the form of his life.

  • Martin Nguyen (BRACE/ONE FC)

While the Australian hasn’t really garnered much media attention, it’d be criminal to look past his 3-0 stint with BRACE in 2013. He most recently picked up a TKO stoppage victory over Luke Standing in November, garnering both the BRACE Featherweight title and an exclusive ONE FC contract.

  • Takeya Mizugaki (UFC)

WEC import Takeya Mizugaki is on a four-fight winning streak in the UFC – three of which have come in this calendar year alone. With wins over notables Nam Phan and Bryan Caraway, it may not be long until we see Mizugaki’s name in the contenders’ hat.

  • Irfan Khan (SFL)

He’s one of the faces for the Super Fight League and there’s a reason for it. The Bantamweight’s go-forward and grind out style has enabled him to rack up a 4-1 record in 2013, and he remains, to date, as one of the best fighters the organization has ever produced.

  • Dong Hyun Kim (UFC)

The “Stun Gun” Dong Hyun Kim has been nothing short of spectacular this year. He solved the puzzle, that was Siyar Bahadurzada, at UFC on FUEL TV 8, before brutally knocking out top Brazilian prospect Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 29.

  • Michinori Tanaka (PXC)

Michinori Tanaka’s 2013 tenure with the Pacific X-Treme Combat saw the Japanese starlet garner the promotion’s Bantamweight title, and make two successful defenses of the championship strap. He has undoubtedly earned the right of being called one of the region’s top Japanese MMA stars with his potent wrestling skills and solid stand-up attacks.

  • Nam Yui Chul (UFC)

The former ROAD FC Lightweight champ topped the highly-touted Takasuke Kume twice this year in championship bouts before inking a deal with the UFC. Can he be just as successful as his current South Korean compatriots in the octagon? Well we’ll soon find out, won’t we?

  • Jason Ramesh Soloman (SFL)

Soloman brings everything one would ever want to see in a fighter in his pro MMA contests. Confidence, cockiness and of course, the ability to finish fights. He has stopped three opponents ruthlessly in 2013 alone, and it won’t be too long before the world recognizes what a talent he his and the remarkable facade he possesses.

  • Amu Rijirigala (RUFF)

China Top Team’s Amu Rijirigala has had a stellar 2013 having gone 3-0 under the RUFF banner. Rijirigala is quickly gaining a reputation as one of China’s prospects to watch for and if he continues what he’s doing, he could be a real force in the region at 125-lbs.

  • Kyoji Horiguchi (UFC)

At just 23-years-old, Kyoji Horiguchi has already established himself as a staple in the Japanese MMA scene with appearances in various domestic outfits. Now apart of the UFC roster, Horiguchi capped off a 3-0 run in October with a TKO victory over Dustin Pague, following consecutive victories under the Vale Tudo Japan and Shooto banners a few months before.
