Fight Sport Asia’s 2013 Asian MMA Awards Results

Our inaugural 2013 Asian MMA Awards have concluded. The polls are now closed, and there might be a result or two that may surprise you.

While Asian MMA has been overlooked by the masses over the past years or so, there’s no denying that a myriad of fighters from the region have gone on to make a huge name for themselves in North America.

There were four categories that we asked fans to vote in: Best Fighter of 2013, Best Fight of 2013, Top 10 Finishes of 2013 and Best Promotion of 2013.

While some categories had some clear front-runners, others were pretty close.

Check out the results of the polls below:

Top 10 Finishes of 2013:

  1. Bhabajeet Choudhury’s Head Kick knockout from SFL 19 – (55%)
  2. Rob Lisita’s Bulldog Choke from Rebel FC 1: Into the Lion’s Den – (9%)
  3. Gyo Pyung Hwang’s Flying Knee knockout from Rebel FC 1: Into the Lion’s Den – (6%)
  4. Minowaman’s knockout from ROAD FC 013 – (5%)
  5. Koji Oishi’s knockout from ONE FC 13: Moment of Truth – (4%)
  6. Jang Yong Kim’s Leg Scissor Choke from PXC 39 – (4%)
  7. Liu Ping Yuan’s knockout from RUFF 9 – (3%)
  8. Joachim Hansen’s Arm-Triangle Choke from ROAD FC 011 – (3%)
  9. Kevin Belingon’s knockout from ONE FC 13: Moment of Truth – (2%)
  10. Kyle Reyes’ Flying Knee knockout from PXC 40 – (2%)

Best Fighter of 2013:

  • Irfan Khan (Super Fight League) – 55%

A whopping 209 votes were cast for Irfan Khan (7-1) alone. “Inferno” went 4-1 in 2013, and has to date, established himself as one of the promotion’s top fighters. The future certainly looks bright for the Indian fighter who never fails to wow audiences in his bouts.

Jason Ramesh Soloman (4-0), also from the Super Fight League, came in at second place while PXC’s high-flying Japanese prospect Michinori Tanaka (9-0), had to settle for third spot.

Best Fight of 2013:

  • Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann (UFC on FUEL TV 8) – 39%

The war that ensued between former PRIDE champ Wanderlei Silva and UFC vet Brian Stann in Tokyo, Japan was an absolute belter which thoroughly deserved “Fight of the Year” honors. Both guys were dropped multiple times in the first frame, keeping fans on the edge of their seats whenever they started trading with heavy punches.

The grappling showcase between Irfan Khan and Sachin Panwar at SFL 16 took second place, while the sparkling affair between Joe Ray and Ole Laursen from DARE: Rebels of MMA came in third.

Best Promotion of 2013:

  • Ranik Ultimate Fighting Federation (China) – 20%

The results were really close in this category but RUFF nicked it with 20% of the total votes going in its favor. The China-based promotion held four events in 2013 and multiple championship match-ups throughout the course of the year. To date, it has produced high profile fighters like Guan Wang, Amu Rijirigala and many others.

Australian Fighting Championship had to settle for second spot, while ONE Fighting Championship came in at third place. It’s well worth noting that just a single vote separated AFC and ONE FC.

Fight Sport Asia would like to congratulate all winners across the categories. It’s exciting times for Asian Mixed Martial Arts, and we’ll continue to strive to bring you the best out of each promotion in the region.
