The highly anticipated Ultimate Fighting Championship in Manila may finally be happening soon and Cung Le, one of the finest mixed martial artists with Asian descent, would love to be a part of the historic event.

Mark Fischer, the UFC Asia Managing Director, said talks with possible partners has gained headway in the past few months and he is looking at holding the first ever UFC event in Manila in May or June.

“It could be sooner,” Fischer told a select group of MMA writers during an intimate media meet yesterday at the 9501 Restaurant inside the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

“We are making good progress and we’re happy with the development. The Philippines is a great place to hold an event and ABS-CBN is going to be a great partner to make this thing happen,” said Fischer, who also revealed that the UFC has planned an aggressive expansion in Asia this year.

Fischer is back in town to oversee the promotional tour by Cung Le whose itinerary included the holding of an MMA seminar last night at the Skyfitness Manila situated in the Podium in Pasig City.

All the proceeds from the event, which was held in cooperation with ABS-CBN’s Balls Channels, the official broadcast network of UFC in the Philippines, will all be donated to the survivors of typhoon Yolanda.

Cung said he wants to come back to the country and fight in front of his Filipino fans.

“If I am to be asked, I’d like to be part as maybe a co-main event or just one of the major undercards,” said Cung, whose last fight was against former UFC champion Rich Franklin.

That was more than a year ago at UFC: Macau where he knocked out Franklin with a huge right hook.

“I’d like to go for three rounds first and I think I can take anybody. Five rounds maybe too rough for me right now,” said Cung, who is in his last stop for his 16-day promotional tour just after concluding his major role as chief mentor of The Ultimate Fighter: China.
