UFC Fight Night 35 Results: Louis Smolka springs upset over Alptekin Ozkilic

The young Hawaiian was a 3-1 underdog heading into his UFC debut with almost every neutral rooting for his Turkish counterpart, Alptekin Ozkilic (9-2).

The bout was contested on the preliminary portion of Tuesday’s UFC Fight Night 35 event, which went down at the The Arena in Duluth, Georgia.

Smolka (7-0) entered the bout fresh off his stint with the Pacific X-Treme Combat, where he served as the promotion’s Flyweight champ before signing with the UFC. The Hawaiian boasted high-profile victories over Ale Cali and Alvin Cacdac, and brought a flawless ‘six-wins-six-stoppages’ resume to the octagon.

Moreover, it was yet another disciple from 808 Top Team looking to make a statement in the UFC. Smolka’s teammate, Russell Doane, made his UFC debut just a fortnight before at UFC Fight Night 34, and was successful as he clinched a submission victory. Suffice to say, Smolka wanted to keep the momentum going, by keeping both his gym and Hawaii on the win column.

Precise and high-volume strikes guided the Hawaiian to a solid Unanimous Decision victory on fight night. Ozkilic landed several aggressive takedowns but could do little to keep his opponent at bay. Smolka was keen to keep proceedings in the stand-up department as he got back to his feet on multiple occasions (with relative ease to the surprise of many) to resume his resolute attack.

The Hawaiian was relentless with his striking throughout, posing threats with punches, kicks, elbows and knees. He came close to finishing the fight in the third frame, where a full mount position allowed him to rain continuous blows.

The final judges’ scorecards read 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28, all in favor of Smolka, who now officially joins fellow PXC vets Russell Doane, Hyun Gyu Lim, Jon Tuck among others on the UFC roster.
