Kevin Belingon a complete, intelligent fighter come ONE FC: War of Nations

Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao is making sure that Kevin Belingon is a complete and intelligent fighter when he steps into the cage against Korean Dae Hwan Kim in the One Fighting Championship’s first event for the year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Already a skilled striker, Belingon is continuously being polished in wrestling at the Lakay headquarters in Benguet.

According to Sanguiao, Iranian coach Ali Hyderabadi regularly goes up to the northern highland gym to train the Lakay fighters, including Belingon who is seeking a fitting follow-up to his devastating first-round knockout win over Spanish warrior David Aranda Satacana.

Belingon improved his record to 13 wins and 3 losses with his KO win over Aranda at ONE FC: Moment of Truth last December at the Mall of Asia Arena, and is looking for another big win that will line up him for a world title fight in the bantamweight division.

“We know the importance of wrestling in our game, so coach Ali joins us every two months for our wrestling training,” said Sangiao, a former MMA fighter himself and a multi-awarded wushu athlete.

Belingon, one of the feared Asian strikers in the cage, will have his hands full against the undefeated Kim in a bantamweight showdown that will serve as co-main event of the ONE FC: War of Nations on March 14 at the Stadium Negara.

The other main offering is ONE FC’s first Welterweight World Championship tussle featuring American submission specialist Brock Larson and Nobutatsu Suzuki of Japan.

Sangiao is not just making Belingon a complete fighter; he also wants him to fight intelligently against Kim.

“We are currently studying the fights of Kim. We want to know his strengths and weaknesses. We want to get the correct timing on when to attack and the right defense. Then we will fit our gameplan based on what we will find out from his fight videos,” explained Sangiao.

Belingon has fought some of the best MMA fighters in the world, including Soo Chul Kim, Masakatsu Ueda, Yusup Saadulaev and Aranda.

Kim, who is undefeated in nine pro MMA bouts, could prove to be his toughest test yet.

Meanwhile, the ONE FC: Moment of Truth fight card has been completed with the addition of hard-hitting Iranian wrestler Kamal Shalorus slugging it out with jiu-jitsu black belt Ariel Sexton.

In the other marquee match-ups, Andrew Leone takes on Shinichi Kojima in a flyweight contest, lightweight Kotetsu Boku faces off with Arnaud Lepont and Filipino-American Harris Sarmiento takes on Herbert Burns.

Also of high interest to Malaysian fight fans is the highly anticipated rematch between their very own Ann Osman and Singaporean Sherilyn Lim.
