Super Fight League returns with “SFL Warriors” series in April

After a five month hiatus stretching all the way back to October 2013, India’s premier Mixed Martial Arts promotion, the Super Fight League, is set to feature its first series of fights for the calendar year.

Officials today announced “SFL Warriors”, a new initiative launched in line with its recently forged partnership with BodyPower India.

Three back-to-back installments of “SFL Warriors” are expected to kick-start on YouTube, with post produced episodes slated for the 11th, 18th and 25th of April. According to COO and matchmaker Daniel Isaac, SFL’s routine “Friday Fight Nights’ series will return soon after.

The bout order for the first episode (which takes place LIVE on March 30th at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai) is complete with six high profile match-ups, headed by a Lightweight title rematch between reigning champ Pawan Maan Singh (4-1) and challenger, Rajinder Singh Meena (7-1).

Officials today confirmed details on Facebook.

Meena garnered the inaugural 155-lbs strap at SFL 13 – Night of Champions, in a tightly contested match-up that saw him triumph via a Guillotine choke in the fourth stanza over Sandeep Yadav. The former FCC staple then made his first title defense against Singh at SFL 22, but it ended in agony as Meena not only succumbed his title that night; his unblemished resume was scathed for the first time as well. Meena was determined to get back into title contention, and did so in an ultra-impressive fashion as he stopped Biki Bora via a single knockout punch just thirteen seconds into their Lightweight affair at SFL 31.

That, apparently, impressed matchmaker Daniel Isaac, who immediately warranted Meena with the rematch he so gravely wanted.

Singh, on the other hand, is probably the only MMA fighter in the region right now holding two titles concurrently in two separate divisions under one roof. After garnering the Lightweight strap against Meena, Singh dethroned Shyam Prasad in the 170-lbs division in his next outing, winning the Welterweight title belt in the process. To date, the only blemish on Singh’s otherwise perfect resume came in a Technical Decision defeat at the hands of Ravindra Balhara.

In the night’s co-main event feature, current SFL Featherweight champ Bharat Khandare (5-1) takes on Abdul Muneer (4-0) in a non-title match-up. Khandare is a perfect 5-0 under the SFL banner while Muneer is on a tear with four first round finishes to his credit. This is guaranteed to be a barn-burner folks.

Elsewhere on the card, Fight Sport Asia’s 2013 Fighter of the Year, Irfan Khan (7-1), faces former SFL 135-lbs champ Anup Kumar (6-2) in a Flyweight tussle, while the always exciting Jason Ramesh Solomon (4-0) looks to continue his streak of impressive finishes when he rematches Mukesh Gora.

“In year 2014, mainstream MMA is already entering its third successful year in India and the SFL is happy to be associated only with the best in the business,” Isaac said. “Bodypower is a great platform for fitness enthusiasts and experts to meet and we are happy to collaborate with Bodypower in India to promote fitness and fantastic fights.”

The latest SFL Warriors card includes:

  • Pawan Maan Singh vs. Rajinder Singh Meena II (For SFL Lightweight Championship title)
  • Bharat Khandare vs. Abdul Muneer
  • Sandeep Kumar vs. Amit Thapa
  • Jason Solomon vs. Mukesh Gora II
