King of PANCRASE Takenori Sato makes UFC debut this weekend

Current Welterweight King of PANCRASE, Takenori Sato (17-8-7), has not lost a fight in nearly four years. And after six straight title defenses, he now makes his first octagon appearance at the 36th instalment of the UFC’s “Fight Night” series this weekend.

UFC Fight Night 36 takes place on February 15th, at the Arena Jaraguá in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil. The event airs on FOX Sports 1, following prelims on the UFC Fight Pass.

Sato is set to face Brazilian starlet Erick Silva, on the FOX Sports 1 main card broadcast. Sato serves as a replacement opponent for Nate Loughran, who was forced to pull out of the tilt due to injury.

The 28-year-old Akita, Japan native made a relatively decent start to his career, amassing a record of 4-1 in his first five outings. He then went on a 2-4-4 run in his next ten bouts, all which spanned between 2005 and 2008.

It was in PANCRASE though that the Japanese veteran made a huge name for himself. He garnered the Welterweight King of PANCRASE title in 2011, and made an astounding six title defenses in two years. He was last seen at the DEEP Tribe Tokyo Fight event in October, where he picked up a second round submission victory over the Netherlands’ Islam Galayev.

Silva, meanwhile, has experienced mixed success in his UFC career thus far. After making a staggering start in his UFC debut, the 29-year-old dropped a controversial disqualification setback against Carlo Prater, before getting back on the win column with a submission victory over Charlie Brenneman at UFC on FX 3. His biggest test came against Jon Fitch at UFC 153, and although he lost that fight, he gained the plaudits for his heart and willingness to put up a fight. At UFC on FUEL TV 10, Silva submitted Jason High impressively with an inverted Triangle Armbar submission maneuver, but came up short against Dong Hyun Kim four months later in a brutal knockout defeat.
