AFC 8 Results: Nick Patterson pulls off an upset, tops Bernardo Magalhaes

Nick Patterson took home arguably the biggest victory of his Mixed Martial Arts career on Saturday night, upsetting former two-time UFC vet Bernardo Magalhaes in the main event of AFC 8.

AFC 8 took place on February 22nd at the Melbourne Pavilion in Victoria, Australia. The entire fight card streamed online for a price of US$14.99 on GFL.tv.

Patterson outpointed Magalhaes with his striking for the duration of the Lightweight contest, not allowing ‘Trekko’ to capitalize on his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu prowess he’s known for. In the end, he scooped the judges’ scorecards with a Unanimous Decision triumph.

With the victory, Patterson is now guaranteed to face 155-lbs champ Daniel Hooker next at a future AFC event. This will be a rematch between both fighters, who last met in August last year.

The co-main event, meanwhile, saw Dean Purdon squaring off against Rodolfo Marques on eight days’ notice. Takedowns and control were the catalyst in ensuring Marques walked off with a Unanimous Decision victory. The Brazilian has now won two-straight fights under the AFC banner.

Elsewhere on the card, in a match-up of intense rivalry between Rick Alchin and Corey Nelson, it was the latter who prevailed with a leg kick clinic. Alchin had no answer to Nelson’s leg kicks and was forced to wave off the fight himself at 3:09 mark of round one.
