Bantamweights clash at UFC 173, as Takeya Mizugaki meets T.J. Dillashaw in Las Vegas

Bantamweights clash, as Takeya Mizugaki is set to take on T.J. Dillashaw in a pivotal bout at 135-lbs later this year at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 24th.

The match-up was first reported by The Fight Nation earlier today.

Takeya Mizugaki (19-7-2) a veteran of the sport for almost a decade has competed all over the world, that first saw the 30-year-old make his Mixed Martial Arts debut back in 2005, stepping under the ropes of Shooto. And since then, Mizugaki has went on to fight under the Cage Force & WEC banners, before making the crossover to the UFC.

The fan favorite has been on incredible form inside the Octagon thus far, having fought in UFC since 2011, Mizugaki has dropped just two bouts inside the cage — Brian Bowles & Chris Cariaso. The Shooting Gym Hakkei affiliate has now put together a 4-fight win streak, with wins  over Jeff Hougland, Bryan Caraway and Erik Perez.

Most recently the hard-nosed Japanese brawler closed out 2013 by securing a Unanimous Decision win over Nam Phan, bringing his record to a respectable 3-0 for the year.

As a new year begins, Mizugaki looks to maintain his recent run of wins and challenge for the 135-lb gold, that’s currently held by divisions ruthless Champion, Renan Barao.

T.J. Dillashaw (9-2) made a name for himself competing on The Ultimate Fighters (TUF) fourteenth season. The 28-year-old, who was touted to win the show made it to the Finale, but eventually fell short to John Dodson losing the contest via TKO. Since that loss, the Team Alpha Male prodigy dominated his next four outings, and then lost a narrow Split Decision to Raphael Assuncao, that many fans thought he won.

Dillashaw returned to the Octagon at the turn of the year, and soon bounced back after putting on a career best performance overcoming Mike Easton in Duluth, Georgia.

Much like his counterpart, T.J. looks to build on his latest win, and his first hurdle of 2014 will be against Takeya Mizugaki.

*UFC 173 will be headlined by a pair of Middleweights, as Chris Weidman (11-0) looks to defend his crown against number one contender Vitor Belfort (24-10) in a highly anticipated match-up.
