“The Fireball Kid” Takanori Gomi returns at UFC 172, faces Isaac Vallie-Flagg in Baltimore

“The Fireball Kid” returns to the Octagon later this year.

PRIDE FC poster boy Takanori Gomi will replace Danny Castillo, and square off against Isaac Valle-Flagg in a 155-lb contest.

UFC 172 is scheduled to take place at Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland on April 26th.

News of the match-up was reported by UFC officials on Tuesday night.

Takanori Gomi (34-9-1) a fan favorite of the sport makes a return to the cage for the first time in over a year. Having debuted inside the Octagon in March 2010, the former PRIDE Lightweight Champion has went on to amass a 3-4 record under the bright lights of the UFC.

The 35-year-old’s last outing saw Gomi face off against UFC veteran Diego Sanchez in his native Japan, at UFC on Fuel TV 8, where Gomi went on to lose a highly controversial Split Decision. Prior to the match-up, the Japanese icon was on a 2-fight win streak, with wins over Mac Danzig & Eiji Mitsuoka.

As a new year begins for the hard-nosed brawler, Gomi aims to get back on track. And his first hurdle of 2014 matches him against Isaac Vallie-Flagg.

Isaac Vallie-Flagg (14-4-1) looks to rebound from his last bout, where he dropped a Unanimous Decision loss to Elias Silverio, that halted the Jackson’s MMA affiliates impressive 11-fight win streak, spanning from 2007-2013.

The Strikeforce import is 1-1 thus far inside the Octagon, with his lone win coming against Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) veteran Yves Edwards via Split Decision on February 2012.

Flagg, who was originally penciled in to face Team Alpha Male product Danny Castillo, now turns his attentions to the hard-hitting Takanori Gomi when the pair collide later this year in what should be an entertaining affair between the two strikers.

*UFC 172 will be headlined by Light Heavyweights, as Jon Jones (19-1) looks to defend his title for an impressive seventh consecutive time, while surging Brazilian, Glover Teixeira (22-2) who hasn’t lost in nine years, aims to end the Champions reign.
