Video: Brock Larson vs. Nobutatsu Suzuki Fight Preview

It’s FIGHT WEEK. ONE Fighting Championship is set for its first event of the calendar year this Friday night with its fourteenth installment, titled ‘War of Nations’, set for the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As with previous events, the main card streams LIVE on an online pay-per-view for a price of USD$9.99 at the following link, and airs LIVE on Star Sports in Asia.

The main event pits a blockbuster Welterweight title match-up between two combatants with polar opposite fight styles. Brock Larson (37-7), a fighter whose pro MMA career has spanned for more than a decade, takes on an attorney turned fighter, Nobutatsu Suzuki (10-1-2).

Larson is a familiar face among most North American hopefuls, with prior stints in organizations such the UFC and WEC. The former one-time WEC title challenger was successful in his promotional ONE FC debut opposite striking phenom Melvin Manhoef in April last year, in a match-up that most fans fancied him to lose by knockout.

But the grizzled 36-year-old vet had a nifty game plan heading into that 170-lbs match-up. He weathered Manhoef’s early storm before rebounding strongly in rounds two and three, working his grappling game to full effect en route to a Unanimous Decision victory.

The American Top Team native will have to put those stellar grappling credentials to test once again when he locks horns with Japan’s Nobutatsu Suzuki. That’s because as with Manhoef, Suzuki, also at 36, prefers to all the talking with his fists as well.

His ten victories have all ended via knockout within the first or second frame. As with his American counterpart, Suzuki experienced success in his ONE FC debut too, scoring a slick TKO victory over former UFC and PRIDE vet, Phil Baroni. Suzuki was in fact scheduled to fight for the vacant 170-lbs title last year, but unfortunate circumstances thwarted the Japanese vet’s second ONE FC appearance to 2014.

It’s a classic striker vs. grappler match-up, but the winner won’t be heading to the sidelines anytime soon once this contest is done and dusted with. He’ll have former Bellator champ Ben Askren to deal with when the promotion hits the shores of Singapore once again on May 31st.
