Folayang has eyes fixed on ONE FC belt

Eduard  “Landslide” Folayang is acknowledged in the combat sport circles as the face of Filipino mixed martial arts.

He won practically every local tournament when MMA was still at its infancy stage in the Philippines.

His all-around striking skills and his never-say-die attitude has earned him the admiration of fight fans. His international stint was a roller-coaster ride though, but even when he was losing, he remained a favorite among fans. He was an exciting fighter to watch.

And even when he was losing, Victor Cui, chief executive officer of ONE Fighting Championship, did not lose faith in him.

After losing three straigh boutst, Folayang won an impressive match last December and it set him up for another duel in ONE FC 15: Rise of Heroes against former ONE FC lightweight champ Kotetsu “No Face” Boku, on May 2nd at the Mall of Asia Arena.

It’s an all-important fight for Folayang, who has vowed to dispose opponents that stand in his way for a world title fight.

“I want that belt. I will go for the belt and Boku is just another step towards that belt and I already know what to do with him,” Folayang told Manila Standard Today/Fight Sport Asia.

Boku is coming off a TKO win against French fighter, Arnaud Lepont, at ONE FC 14: War Of Nations just last month. He is eager to extend his winning streak to boost his already impressive 21-9-2 record.

Folayang and female compatriot Jugeth Nagaowa were accompanied by ONE FC officials Loren Mack and Gerald Ng, along with Filipino PR representative Charmaine Cruz during a meet with a select group of media at the Shangrila Hotel recently.

Nagoawa, a former boxing champion, is finally making her debut in Asia’s biggest MMA organization, facing Indian kickboxer Jeet Toshi.

The Folayang-Boku bout will serve as co-main event to the bantamweight title fight between defending champion Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil and top challenger Masakatsu Ueda of Japan.

Folayang’s teammate at Team Lakay, Rey Docyogen, is the latest addition to the list of Filipino fighters seeing action in the ONE FC Rise of Heroes. He will take on Guam’s Joshua “The Hedgehog” Alvarez in a flyweight battle.

The fourth Filipino fighter on the card is Eugene Toquero of Submission Sport Philippines as he tries to get back to winning ways by facing Malaysian rising star Gianni Subba.

The ONE FC cage will also host a battle between two top middleweights, Leandro Ataides and Tatsuya Mizuno.
