The UFC Signs Masanori Kanehara

Longtime Japanese MMA Standout Masanori Kanehara has signed to fight in the UFC.  Masanori Kanehara has amassed a Professional MMA record of 23-11-5 (8 KO, 9 SUB).  Masanori Kanehara is well known on the Japanese MMA scene for his run to the first WVR: Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix Title.  Masanori Kanehara defeated both grizzled Asian MMA veteran Jong Man Kim and former UFC title challenger, Chan Sung Jung or better known as the “Korean Zombie”.  In the Semi-finals of the Grand Prix, Hatsu Hioki defeated Masanori Kanehara by Decision, but was unable to continue to the finals that night.  Masanori Kanehara stepped in and halted Michihiro Omigawa’s run to the title by taking the split decision in the finals of the GP.  Masanori Kanehara then went on to defeat MMA legend Norifumi “KID” Yamamoto at K-1 Dynamite 2009, dropping the favorite Yamamoto twice in the fight and taking home the Unanimous Decision win in a non-title bout.  In Masanori Kanehara’s first title defense, he got completely run over by Marlon Sandro and put to sleep with a combination of punches.  A loss in a crazy one minute fight with Yoshiro Maeda and to Rasul Mirzaev have been Kanehara’s only setbacks in his past 9 fights (not counting the DQ at DEEP Cage Impact 66).  Kanehara’s most recent triumph was his 21 second knockout over Pride FC veteran Joe Pearson.
