On Wednesday, October 8th in Biloxi, Mississippi, U.S.A., Australian-born 40-year-old Sam Soliman (44-12) attempted to defend his title against former WBA, WBO Middleweight and Super Middleweight Title holder Jermain Taylor (33-4-1), but fell short. Soliman was in control of the fight early before a great sixth round by Jermain. Taylor would knock Soliman down in the 7th round where it looked like Soliman damaged his ankle severly, but kept on fighting. Jermain would go on to manhandle the tough Australian, scoring knockdowns in round 8, 9 and 11, although some of them looked like the ankle more than the punches. Jermain took the unanimous decision (116-111, 116-109, 115-109) victory and won the IBF Middleweight (160lbs) Title. Jermain previously won the IBF World Middleweight Title in 2005 when he took a split decision win over current WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight Champ Bernard Hopkins. This loss stunted a ten fight unbeaten streak for Soliman.
Also on the fight card, boxing prospect Andre Dirrell (23-1) was able to stop Nick Brinson with a counter left hook that sent Brinson reeling. Dirrell immediately went for the finish, putting punches in combination all over Brinson’s body before getting the finishing shot for the 4th round finishing, getting his 23rd win and 16th knockout victory.
