UFC Fight Night 55 Results: Luke Rockhold Hurts, Submits Michael Bisping

UFC Fight Night 55

TUF Season 3 winner Michael Bisping (25-6) fought former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold (12-2).  Luke Rockhold took control of the center of the octagon.  A clash of heads opened a cut on Michael Bisping’s head.  A strange reset after the head butt and the men were separated.  A solid left body kick landed for Rockhold.  Rockhold was getting just outside of Bisping’s punches with his footwork.  Rockhold chasing Bisping down towards the final minute of the round.  Most of the attacks from the left side of Rockhold, switching between kicks and punches.  Bisping defending well.  Rockhold was the aggressor in the round.

A counter left landed early in the first round for Rockhold.  A left head kick to the forehead after a right head kick put Michael Bisping down.  Rockhold couldn’t get the finish from Herb Dean so he jumped on a guillotine, rolled to mount and finished the submission.  Luke Rockhold was the first man to submit Michael Bisping in his MMA career.

TUF Season 9 winner Ross Pearson (16-7) fought TUF 15 runner-up Al Iaquinta (9-3-1).  Pearson came out the aggressor in the first round.  Iaquinta was able to land a heavy right over the top followed by a heavy counter right by Ross.  Iaquinta hit a counter with Ross coming back with a left head kick.  The first round was close.  The second round came out and Iaquinta came out with more volume.  A strong left leg kick to start the round, set the tone for his aggression and power later in the fight.  A huge counter right knocked Ross down.  Iaquinta went for the kill, landing a hard right cross to start off a 7-punch combination of alternating left and rights that forced the stoppage.

TUF: Smashes winner Robert Whittaker (13-4) battled TUF 17 contestant Clint Hester (11-3).  Robert Whittaker made his Middleweight debut against Hester.  Clint Hester was looking for his fifth win inside the octagon, that would prove to be difficult early on when Whittaker landed a hard left hand that briefly stunned Hester.  Robert Whittaker would continue to land some good low kicks and a heavy right cross that seemed to hurt Clint.  Robert controlled the rest of the round, hitting a double leg takedown off the cage, getting to half guard and eventually moving to mount.  He wasn’t there long as Hester used the cage to bounce up and the round ended.

The second round started quickly as Whittaker landed a hard counter left and a left kick to left hooks combination.  Whittaker went in aggressively and was hit with a counter left by Hester that started a series of exchanges with bad intentions.  The finishing blows happened just after a stiff knee to the body by Hester.  Two heavy right hands rumbled the chin of Hester and sent him moving back, a high right knee finished the job.  Hester covered up and Whittaker forced the stoppage with more punches.

Soa Palelei and Walt Harris didn’t have much in the way of action.  The best strike of the fight came from Walt Harris, a body kick that echoed through the arena.  The second round slowed to a halt before Soa was able to get the takedown and take half guard.  Soa heard the pleading of his corner and started to throw more punches and hammerfists from the top.  Walt Harris couldn’t take anymore and the referee stepped in to halt the bout with just over ten seconds remaining.

Dylan Andrews took Alvey down early in the first round, taking mount about two minutes in.  Alvey got back to his feet as Dylan Andrews went for the takedown and looked to stun himself when his head hit the mat.  Alvey quickly pounced as Andrews was slow to recover.  Five punches rained down on Andrews to halt the bout.   Louis Smolka wins a performance of the night bonus on the night of knockouts.  A left side kick in the third round crumbled Richie Vaculik.  Follow up ground and pound put an end to the fight.  After a controlling round from Vik Grujic, Chris Clements landed a high right knee and a series of right hands that folded the Australian in half.  Another first round finish.

Luke Zachrich and Australian Judoka Dan Kelly traded early and often, but it was Kelly who was able to get on top and finish the fight.  Kimura grabbed the right arm of Zachrich, hopped from half guard and stepped over the head.  Dan Kelly locked in the submission.  The night started off with a bang as Marcus Brimage threw a left high kick that just barely hit Tuerxun’s chin, sending him crashing to the mat.  Three follow up punches landed before the referee could stop the fight, a brutal knockout that started off a great night of fights.
