Fight Sport Asia’s 2014 MMA Awards: Promotion of the Year

Promotion of the Year 2014

Winner: ONE FC

Mixed martial arts has continued to spread all throughout Asia in 2014 and with aggressive changes from the UFC’s operations in Asia, the Asian mixed martial arts scene will continue to grow.  Hiccups in China were cured by M-1 and ONE FC in 2014, both holding events in Beijing during the fourth quarter of the year .  The promotion with the most prominence in the region in 2014 was ONE FC.  With 11 events, across 8 different countries, ONE FC brought the most diverse roster of fighters to the circular cage.  Dominant talents, promising stars and exciting fights define what ONE FC promotes.  In 2014, ONE FC held 11 events with a total of 102 fights.  The ONE FC ruleset allows fighters to finish fights with more options of attack, this had led to a incredibly high finish rate under the ONE FC banner.  Over 74 percent of the fights held by ONE FC this year didn’t go the distance, 52 of those fights ending by way of knockout.  Fight Sport Asia’s promotion of the year is ONE FC.

Runner-up: DEEP/DEEP Jewels

The top ranked promotion in Japan for both men and women (Jewels).  DEEP held 20 events this year, including the final event of the year, DEEP DREAM Impact 2014.  The event was created to uphold the long tradition of major MMA events being held on New Year’s Eve in Tokyo, Japan.  DEEP stepped in with the help of the close second in Japan, Pancrase, and created one of the best events of the year.  DEEP Jewels is the best all female MMA promotion in Japan and produces some of the best female MMA fighters in the world.

Honorable Mentions

Pancrase: Pancrase fighters held their own at the DEEP DREAM Impact event and with more talent acquisition from the west, the promotion should continue to be competitive at the top in Asia.  Pancrase has switched from it’s traditional roots in recent years, transforming the promotion to better compete on a global level of MMA.

Road FC: With 10 events in 2014, Road FC continues to expand and grow it’s crop of fighters.  With top talent all over the Korean MMA scene, Road FC produces exciting fights.  With apparent plans to hold events in Japan, could we see more cross promotion in Asia?
