Alvarado vs Rios III: The End?

In the world of boxing, some men are fated to fight each other. Sugar Ray Robinson had Jake LaMotta, Manny Pacquiao had Juan Manuel Marquez, and Mickey Ward had Arturo Gatti. Come January 24, fans will have another great series to celebrate as Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado lock horns for the third time. The pair have already been through two great battles and their third encounter should be no different. This time, they will be fighting for the vacant WBO International Welterweight title. In this fiery rubber match however, the belt is almost an afterthought as both men may be fighting to keep their careers alive.

Rios and Alvarado have always been exciting fighters. However, they seem to be a notch or two below the elite class of professional boxing. Rios managed to capture the WBA Lightweight title in 2011 but was stripped of it in the same year for missing weight. Alvarado won the WBO Interim Light Welterweight title off Rios but failed to secure the belt against Ruslan Provodnikov. 2013 was a year of high profile losses for both men which led many to believe they were on the tail end of their careers. Coming off his 2014 loss to Juan Manuel Marquez, it was only natural for Alvarado to face Rios once more.

The third fight will be a pivotal one. Rios has taken a lot of damage in his last few fights and was looking lacklustre against Diego Chaves. According to Boxing News 24, he said he may retire if he loses to Alvarado again. While Alvarado has not shared the same sentiments, he could be looking at a similar situation. He is currently on a two fight losing streak and another loss could shut the door on any upcoming opportunities. It is building up to be a “loser leaves town” match with their careers hanging in the balance. For Rios and Alvarado however, there could be no better opponents to decide their futures.rios, alvarado

Whenever Alvarado and Rios face off in the ring, there are fireworks. Their potent infight, aggressive pace, and tenacity make for some of the most TV friendly fights. If you are looking for finesse, these two warriors will be throwing it out the window as they go head to head at full pelt. The end to their trilogy is definitely not to be missed.
